Remember back in college when you had to write those exhaustive research papers? I do. There were times the words just flew out of my mind and onto the page with ease. More so than not, however, I had some trouble formulating a thought or determining the direction the paper should go. I had thought about the topic so much that I was in the dreaded “WRITER’S BLOCK.” My mind was so filled with facts, figures, and formulas, that I could not process a rational thought to save my life. Can anyone else relate?
Unfortunately, times of “BLOCK” follow us from school research papers to our work places as well. I can’t tell you how many times I have been working on a project and no matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to get past one aspect. I give several scenarios, try it different ways, but nothing seems to pop out as “THAT’S IT!” There are many different methods that people have used to deter or get past this “block.” I have used several myself. Here are a few:
- Take a Walk
- Turn on or change the music
- Change the lighting
- Step away and do something not related (video game, read a book, etc...)
- Talk it out with someone else
That last one is always the kicker. I usually go through the list and end up on the last one, when really what I should do is start with the last one and save myself some time and frustration. I have found that talking it through with someone helps to alleviate the block issue by giving you another opinion. There are even times I figure out the problem or issue myself without them saying a word. I just needed to talk it out.
